The BMEP Engine Cylinder Balancer uses a pneumatic damping system to yield the mean value of the pressure within a cylinder over its entire power cycle.

The unit consists of a series of orifices, each followed by an expansion chamber.

Each stage smooths the pressure pulses until, in the last chamber, pressure is essentially constant.

Although peak firing pressures may exceed 1,000 pounds per square inch, mean effective pressure for the cycle will usually fall between 50 and 150 pounds per square inch, depending on engine design and load.
